Learning Preferences to Physiology of Undergraduate Students in a Chinese Medical School

By Yuemin Ding Jianxiang Liu Hong Ruan Xiong Zhang

DOI: https://doi.org/10.5815/ijeme.2012.02.01, Pub. Date: 29 Feb. 2012

Students learning may be classified according to the sensory modalities using VARK instrument, which categorizes learning modes as visual (V), auditory (A), reading-writing (R), or kinesthetic (K). We administered the VARK questionnaire to our second-year medical students, and 98 of 133 students (74%) returned the completed questionnaire. Only 14.3% of the students preferred a single mode of information presentation. In contrast, most students (85.7%) preferred multiple modes of information presentation. Knowing the students preferred modes and using web-based learning system may help the instructors to tailor to the student's individual preference in the teaching of medical science.

Heated Oil Pipeline Shutdown and Restart Simulation Software Development Using VB and MATLAB Hybrid Programming

By Changjun Li Wenlong Jia Kexi Liao Xia Wu

DOI: https://doi.org/10.5815/ijeme.2012.02.02, Pub. Date: 29 Feb. 2012

During the operation of heated oil transportation pipeline, the shutdown is caused by some pipeline accidents or repairing. In order to ensure the safety operation of the pipeline, determine the temperature drop and restart pressure needed at different shutdown lasting time is important. This paper builds the heated oil pipeline shutdown and restart mathematic model based on heat transfer and fluid mechanics theory. The VB and MATLAB hybrid programming method which is on the basis of COM technical is utilized to develop heated oil pipeline shutdown and restart simulation software. The software application shows using of VB and MATLAB hybrid programming method can reduce the work of algorithm developing and enhance the reliability of heated oil pipeline shutdown and restart simulation software.

Study of Index Mechanism for GML Data

By Yajuan Yao Lijuan Shi

DOI: https://doi.org/10.5815/ijeme.2012.02.03, Pub. Date: 29 Feb. 2012

GML is the encoding specification of geospatial data, currently more and more geospatial data are represented in GML documents. In order to query GML data efficiently, appropriate index structure should be designed. As the application of XML in geospatial information field, the management of GML data can borrow ideas from the management technologies of XML data. Two types of existing XML path index technologies are analyzed, and a method to build path index for the GML document is proposed based on its storage schema. The path index records the sequences and levels of elements in the GML document. Tuples stored in tables can be quickly located for a query with the path index, and the structure information recorded in the path index can help to reconstruct the GML document.

Improved Particle Swarm Optimization for Constrained Optimization

By Zhicheng Qu Qin Yang

DOI: https://doi.org/10.5815/ijeme.2012.02.04, Pub. Date: 29 Feb. 2012

In this paper, we present an improved particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm to solve constrained optimization problems. The proposed approach, called MPSO, employs a novel mutation operator to enhance the global search ability of PSO. In order to deal with constrains, MPSO uses mean violations mechanism and boundaries search. Simulation results on five famous benchmark problems show that MPSO achieves better results than standard PSO and another variant of PSO.

Promote Research-learning in Teaching of the Basic Theoretical Courses

By Hua Han Fei Tang

DOI: https://doi.org/10.5815/ijeme.2012.02.05, Pub. Date: 29 Feb. 2012

It is an inevitable choice for college and universities to foster an innovation talent through guiding students to conduct research-learning. In order to foster a “student-oriented” concept and try to bring up the students’ research capabilities in our whole process of teaching, teachers should improve their own teaching abilities and academic levels, carry out research-teaching actively, and make it align with students’ research-learning. It develops research quality and trains students to form an awareness of research so that teachers can promote research-learning in teaching of the basic theoretical courses. This article describes the effectiveness of pilot projects and pilot cases.

Study on the Examination Pattern of the Engineering Specialized Courses

By Chen Zhao Yuan-Gang Wang Jian-Xiao Ma Ai-Hua Yu

DOI: https://doi.org/10.5815/ijeme.2012.02.10, Pub. Date: 29 Feb. 2012

A comprehensive questionnaire was taken in the faculties and students of engineering subjects. By analyzing the drawback of current engineering specialized course examination, a new pattern of examination is proposed related to contents of examination, methods of examination, types of examination questions and grading standards. The new pattern of examination was tested in typical courses. It is found that the all-process assessing system, open-book and half-open-book examination should be adopted. The scope of examination contents can be broadened. The examination questions should be comprehensive, practice-oriented and open-mind. The students’ practical ability can be checked by the questions of experiment, design and research. By using the new pattern of examination, the teachers and students would be guided to focus on the ability of comprehensively applying engineering knowledge and analyzing and solving specialized problems.
