K-12 Curriculum Research: The Chicken and the Egg of Math-aided ICT Teaching

In this article, we examine the relationship in K-12 education between Mathematics and Information and Communication Technology (ICT). The topic is reviewed from various angles, based on both a literature study and by directly contrasting the Finnish National Curriculum (FNC) of 2014 (effective since autumn 2016) with the National Curriculums of the UK (UKNC)[3] and the US (USCC)[2].
Finland has chosen a cross-curricular approach to developing the new curriculum for teaching ICT, which involves integrating it mainly with math, but also with handicraft, and various other subjects. This is in direct contrast to the UKNC, for example, which teaches ICT as its own field, to be taught through the Computing and Design/Technology syllabi. This poses a question for this research study, namely, how well do teaching math and ICT fit together? The first step towards answering this question is to establish which ICT concepts and domains are directly supported by math and which are left uncovered. As a theoretical research paper, the rationale for the inter-connectedness of math and ICT is based on the work of many researchers. To illustrate our comparison of the two subjects, in this article we concentrate on clarifying math’s and ICT’s shared concepts of variable and function.
The results of this study indicate that transfer between the subjects happens bi-directionally, which might suggest that teaching ICT in combination with particular branches of math, notably algebra would be of benefit to our students. In order to pursue this approach, extra modules for logic, basic linear algebra and set theory would also be required. The fundamentals of basic algebra, the function and the variable, and their significance as synthesizers in both algebra and ICT are highlighted. In addition, the use of calculators as function tutors is explored in an instructional classroom setting. The conclusion of this study is that although there are certain benefits to the currently chosen approach of teaching ICT in combination with mathematics, these are not enough to outweigh the advantages of adopting a more versatile dedicated ICT syllabus, such as that provided by the UKNC.

Advances in Mechanics and Outlook for Future Mankind Progress

Three problems for the interaction between N bodies to which exact solutions were obtained are discussed. In the first problem, the bodies are located axisymmetrically in a plane. Possible trajectories of the bodies here are ellipses, parabolas, hyperbolas, or straight lines. Results of solving this problem are further used for solving problems about Earth’s rotation and Mercury’s perihelion. In the second problem, the body system consists of several layers, and it rotates as an entity. In the third problem, the bodies are uniformly distributed over a sphere, and they move experiencing no mutual collisions. The latter problem allows the formation of several planets, for instance, one hundred planets resembling the Earth and moving under identical conditions with respect to the Sun. The latter possibility opens a way toward unrestricted mankind progress.

Evaluating the Potentials of Educational Systems to Advance Implementing Multimedia Technologies

Implementing multimedia in education has proven to be quite beneficial to the educational processes by enhancing the students’ cognitive abilities, accelerating of memorization and learning, and easing the understanding of abstract entities. But, for an educational system, whether it is a single institution, regional system, or even a state level system, the information that multimedia technologies provide enhancements to the educational processes is not sufficient to achieve the acclaimed advancements. To improve learning by implementing multimedia, decisions about actions and investments must be based on a specific analysis of the current condition of the educational system. In this manner, this research presents an evaluation methodology that supports the purposes of strategic planning and investments in education, in the context of advancements implementing multimedia. The methodology takes into account three key aspects: i) multimedia equipment and IT resources, ii) teacher competencies and their interest in adding multimedia to their lectures, and iii) promotional events about using multimedia in education. As a case study, the secondary school system in the city of Veles, R. Macedonia was evaluated, where the results showed the system’s strong and weak aspects, giving a profound direction in which the future enhancement efforts should be conducted.

AMMAS: Ambient Mobile Multi-Agents System: Simulation of the M-Learning

Recent years have witnessed the increase of the field of mobile learning, fostered by the continuous development of mobile computing and wireless technology, today the mobile learning presents a fundamental approach to satisfy our daily needs and requirements. Specifically, in this work, we aim to study as model and simulate the ambient mobile system which is based on intelligent agents. The mobile agent is not based on the traditional client server however it is based on the distributed ones. The present article proposes a mobile intelligent agent based architecture for the M-Learning that aims to facilitate the teacher and student acquisition. M-Learning is a new research area which became a principal tool for our education system. So we produced an adapted agent based approach for an efficient flexible.
In our work we proceed as follows: first, we introduce the scope and the genesis of our research, second, we hold out the m-learning is the next generation of e-learning, afterwards, we present our AMMAS (Ambient Mobile Multi-Agents System) model for the M-Learning and an overview of the system implementation, and finally we conclude our work and give some perspectives.

Automatic Robust Segmentation Scheme for Pathological Problems in Mango Crop

Machine vision and soft computing techniques have been promising in the field of agriculture and horticulture to remove the barriers of conventional methods for detecting the plant diseases using different plant parts. Image segmentation technique is first and primary step in all the related researches such as fruit grading, leaf lesion region detection etc. In this paper, a robust technique for Mango crop using different plant parts such as Fruit, Flower and Leaf has been proposed in order to detect the disease more accurately. The captured real time images are pre-processed for illumination normalization and color space conversion before segmentation. The standard K-Means clustering scheme has been made adaptive and edge detection transforms have been applied to improve the segmentation results. Here, the objective function of K-Means clustering technique has been modified and cluster centers also have been updated to segment the diseased parts from images. The results obtained are better in the terms of both general human observation and in computational time.

Adaptive Framework to Manage Multiple Teams Using Agile Methodologies

The increased demand of agile methods results in challenging and unique problems, one of which is the unsuitability of agile methods for software development companies, particularly those with multiple teams. Secondly, agile methods are silent regarding how to achieve long-term organizational goals within the umbrella of agile software engineering. Considering these software industry problems, a new contemporary learning-based adaptive framework is proposed in the domain of agile methods. The proposed framework will help software companies to achieve long-term organizational goals. It is anticipated that the proposed framework will increase employee satisfaction by improving their technical skills and interpersonal communication capabilities using contemporary learning and knowledge-sharing activities. A survey is conducted from multinational software companies to validate the proposed adaptive framework, and the results are notably supportive and encouraging.

A Centralized Controller as an Approach in Designing NoC

This paper presents a new NoC architecture to improve flexibility and area consumption using a centralized controller. The idea behind this paper is improving SDN concept in NoC. The NoC routers are replaced with small switches and a centralized controller doing the routing algorithm and making control decisions. As one of the main desirable property of NoC is flexibility, in this work with the help of centralized controller, having different topologies and also having two separate networks in a single platform is possible. The other effects of this new scheme are power and area consumption which are investigated. Performance of the NoC is also studied with an analytical model and compared with the traditional NoC. The proposed NoC is implemented in VHDL, simulated and tested with ISE Xilinx.
