Developing E-Business Strategies Curriculum Case Study in the Information Systems Department

E-Business Strategies (EBS) is an elective course in the Information Systems Department, Faculty of Computing & Information Technology at King Abdulaziz University, Jeddah. In this course, students learn many concepts regarding e-business, such as strategies, models, relationships and so on. Also, they improve their leadership skills, such as analyzing the business environment and take the decisions. In this paper, we address the main challenges faced by the EBS course developers and study all the components of the existing EBS course. We then determine a learning strategy using an Outcomes-based Education (OBE) approach and redesign the course using an Active Learning Approach. This paper provides comprehensive information concerning an EBS course in terms of its importance, goals, textbook and evaluation tools.

Learning the Related Mathematics to Cryptography by Interactive Way

Cryptography is a complex area in the computer science field due to the complexity of the mathematics involved. The main goal of this paper is to discuss how we can take an advantage of the online interactive tools to facilitate this complex topic. These interactive tools can enhance the students learning better than the traditional way especially when we teach mathematic concepts. We are going to illustrate an online interactive tool that uses the Modular Arithmetic in a virtual environment. A case study was conducted on a group of students from the King Abdulaziz University. The result of evaluating the tool indicates that this tool has good usability in terms of learnability, usefulness, ease of use, and outcome.

Improve Teaching Method of Data Mining Course

It is clearly perceived that most of theoretical information we teach to students are lost after graduation, mostly because abstract information do not last in students' minds much longer than the final exams, as they are not related to practical aspects and uses. Though labs are useful, they are not enough as they only offer exercises, but the course benefits will highly increase if students implement theories and exercises on a real life project. Data mining (DM) is one of the core courses which Information Systems students start to use after graduation once they start their career life. This paper focuses on improving the teaching ways of the course we shall implement, in order to attain a better understanding and comprehension by the students to make it more useful in their future real life careers, and it demonstrates the improvements in students' marks average after applying main concepts to real data.

Gender Differences on Information Literacy of Science and Engineering Undergraduates

Information literacy (IL) forms the basis of lifelong learning and plays very important role for students majoring in science and engineering. As far as higher education concerned, gender differences to may influence students’ academic achievements. In order to evaluate the gender differences on information literacy of undergraduates, we surveyed certain undergraduates using self-made questionnaire. The data of the survey was analyzed by SPSS. The findings of the study indicate that the gap of gender difference does exist in the sphere of information literacy. The result of t-test for two groups of male and female students shows significant difference in terms of mean scores obtained in information consciousness, information competency and information ethics tests.

Robust Algorithm for Face Detection in Color Images

Robust Algorithm is presented for frontal face detection in color images. Face detection is an important task in facial analysis systems in order to have a priori localized faces in a given image. Applications such as face tracking, facial expression recognition, gesture recognition, etc., for example, have a pre-requisite that a face is already located in the given image or the image sequence. Facial features such as eyes, nose and mouth are automatically detected based on properties of the associated image regions. On detecting a mouth, a nose and two eyes, a face verification step based on Eigen face theory is applied to a normalized search space in the image relative to the distance between the eye feature points. The experiments were carried out on test images taken from the internet and various other randomly selected sources. The algorithm has also been tested in practice with a webcam, giving (near) real-time performance and good extraction results.

Issues of Technical Support for e-Learning Systems in Higher Education Institutions

Information and communication technologies (ICTs) have provided several tools to facilitate higher education. However, their effective use demands technical expertise to achieve the required academic goals. The university constituents (teachers, students and administrators) are given eTraining but this is not enough. Every eLearning system establishes a basic ‘infrastructure’ of computers, networks, communications and a technical department filled with ICT professionals to consistently maintain and upgrade the infrastructure, train the users and continuously provide technical support as and when required by them. Given the non-stop nature of technical support for eLearning, HEIs are facing issues in creating robust infrastructural facilities that are both competitive with the external environment and compatible with the internal user requirements. This article is a compendium of the touchy aspects in sustained technical support for eLearning in HEIs.

Undergraduate Program in Network Engineering and Security – A Feasibility Study

In this article, a feasibility study for initiating a new undergraduate program in network engineering and security is presented. The study was based on surveying and analyzing the current and projected future market demand for specialized network engineering graduates. The results of the study concluded that the demand for such a specialty in the work place is rapidly growing as the networking and telecommunication technologies are becoming essential and integral parts of about any organization around the world. As a result of the study, a pioneering program of network engineering and security was established at the Jordan University of Science and Technology.

Adoption of Employment-oriented Experience Training Program to Improve Undergraduates Employment Competence

To enhance undergraduates employment competitive advantages, communication and expression capability and team cooperation ability in engineering practice experiences, an experience training program is adopted to cultivate compound international talents of software development required by software companies. For the training program, knowledge spans and integration extent of teaching contents, implementation flow and flexible evaluation methods are also illustrated in detail. Especially during practical training project selected from software companies, students are guided to cooperate with team members to complete regular software development, which will improve their employment competence and make them fit for their future work more rapidly. With auxiliary experience training online teaching platform, three times of training program has been carried out successfully and a statistics table shows effects of the training program.
