Design of a Radiation Hardened Register File for Highly Reliable Microprocessors

By Ramin Rajaei

DOI: https://doi.org/10.5815/ijem.2016.05.02, Pub. Date: 8 Sep. 2016

In this paper, a powerful bit upset masking (PBUM) technique for design of a high reliable register file is proposed. This technique is based on the triple modular redundancy (TMR) technique with the key capability of double faulty bit masking in every triad of bits while the TMR structure, only masks one fault in a triad.
We implemented a 64-bit register file comprised of 64 registers protected with the proposed PBUM technique on FPGA. Our simulation results reveal that, over the TMR and some Hamming code-based techniques, our design offers a very higher robustness against radiation induced soft errors. Also, the proposed PBUM technique imposes a lower delay than its counterparts at the expense of a little higher area overhead. To reduce the area overhead, an area-efficient strategy is suggested that balances the reliability improvement and the area overhead. We show that, our technique using this area-aware strategy still has the highest reliability among the other considered techniques.

Effect of Various Filler Materials on Interlaminar Shear Strength (ILSS) of Glass/Epoxy Composite Materials

By C.Venkateshwar Reddy P.Ramesh Babu R.Ramnarayanan

DOI: https://doi.org/10.5815/ijem.2016.05.03, Pub. Date: 8 Sep. 2016

The main objective of the study was to investigate the effect of various filler materials on inter laminar shear properties of glass/epoxy composite materials. In this study three different filler materials were selected (SiO2, TiO2, Glass powder) for high strength and stiffness applications. The physical properties are also studied with the composites. The fiber volume fraction of material plays vital role in preparation of composite laminates. The fabrication method used was conventional hand lay-up process depending upon the resin system hot temperature cure and room temperature curing processes were selected. The short beam shear test was carried out to test inter laminar shear strength (ILSS). The short beam shear test results inter laminar shear strength and to find the significant influence of filler material on characterization of glass fiber reinforced plastic (GFRP) composite. The test results shown that high shear strength were observed with silicon dioxide(SiO2) filler material and with 10% of silicon dioxide filler material shows maximum ILSS value.

Simulation of Eddy Current Separation of Gold Particles from Sands

By Ayad Ahmed Nour El Islam Ayad Abdelghani Ramdani Youcef

DOI: https://doi.org/10.5815/ijem.2016.05.04, Pub. Date: 8 Sep. 2016

The particles of gold can be reuse and recovered from electronics products and cards by sorting from many other metals or from sands. In mixtures of small gold spheres and sands have been sorted by an efficient method called eddy current separation able to separate the gold from a mixture of non ferrous particles. It's a mining sort and recycling industry. This study is based on the ejected force created by the eddy currents induced and the rotation of drum. These eddy currents create a opposing magnetic field to create magneto-dynamic repulsive force between permanent magnet of separator and gold particles, these last will be ejected in collector by gravity force.

Process Parameters Influence on Impact Toughness and Microstructure of Pre-heat Treated Friction Welded 15CDV6 Alloy Steel

By D. Raji Reddy P.Laxminarayana G.C.M. Reddy G.M.S.Reddy

DOI: https://doi.org/10.5815/ijem.2016.05.05, Pub. Date: 8 Sep. 2016

Friction welding is a solid state joining process the joints are formed by utilizing the heat generated by friction. This paper discusses the importance of impact toughness in friction welded components and the effect of various process parameters on impact toughness. The process parameters considered in this research work are friction force, Forge force, rotational speed and burn-off length for the 15CDV6 alloy steel and the Impact toughness is optimized to establish the weld quality using the Taguchi experimental design technique with an orthogonal array of L9, ANOVA. The effects of process parameters are discussed in detail based on the values obtained in the ANOVA and micro structural observations.
