By Ashok Kumar Veerasamy Daryl D Souza Rolf Linden Erkki Kaila Mikko-Jussi Laakso Tapio Salakoski

DOI: https://doi.org/10.5815/ijmecs.2016.05.01, Pub. Date: 8 May 2016

In this paper, the correlation between lecture attendance and assessment tasks on final exam performance of introductory programming students has been analyzed to identify if lecture attendance, and completion of in-class and take home formative assessment tasks affects student performance in the final examination. In this study, only lecture attendance, homework exercises and class demonstration scores, and final exam marks have been considered. This study used Spearman’s Rank correlation coefficient and multiple regression techniques via SPSS software to analyze the student data of the academic years 2012, 2013 and 2014 of an introductory programming course to test the hypotheses. It is found that, there is a significant correlation between homework exercises and final exam scores. However, formal lecture attendance and final exam performance were negatively correlated. Moreover, multiple regression results of assessment tasks such as homework exercises, class activities and lecture attendance on final exam scores, did not provide any significant value to support the statement “Marks achieved in homework, class demonstrations, and lecture attendance, have a significant positive impact on final examination results”.

By Zhengbing Hu Yevgeniy V. Bodyanskiy Oleksii K. Tyshchenko Olena O. Boiko

DOI: https://doi.org/10.5815/ijmecs.2016.05.02, Pub. Date: 8 May 2016

A new approach to data stream clustering with the help of an ensemble of adaptive neuro-fuzzy systems is proposed. The proposed ensemble is formed with adaptive neuro-fuzzy self-organizing Kohonen maps in a parallel processing mode. Their learning procedure is carried out with different parameters that define a nature of cluster borders’ blurriness. Clusters’ quality is estimated in an online mode with the help of a modified partition coefficient which is calculated in a recurrent form. A final result is chosen by the best neuro-fuzzy self-organizing Kohonen map.

An Identification of Better Engineering College with Conflicting Criteria using Adaptive TOPSIS

By T. Miranda Lakshmi V. Prasanna Venkatesan A. Martin

DOI: https://doi.org/10.5815/ijmecs.2016.05.03, Pub. Date: 8 May 2016

Students like to find better engineering college for their higher education. It is very challenging to find the better engineering college with conflicting criteria. In this research, the criterion such as academic reputation and achievements, infrastructure, fees structure, location, quality of the faculty, research facilities and other criterion are considered to find the better engineering college. Multi Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) is the most well known branch of decision making under the presence of conflicting criteria. TOPSIS is one of the MCDM technique widely applied to solve the problems which involves many number of criteria. In this research, TOPSIS is Adaptive and applied to find better engineering college. To evaluate the proposed methodology the parameters such as time complexity, space complexity, sensitivity analysis and rank reversal are considered. In this comparative analysis, better results are obtained for Adaptive TOPSIS compared to COPRAS.

By I Nyoman Jampel I Wayan Widiana Dewa Gede Hendra Divayana

DOI: https://doi.org/10.5815/ijmecs.2016.05.04, Pub. Date: 8 May 2016

This research purpose was to know the differences of student’s learning outcome between the students which is learn through the implementation of authentic assessment development result based on ICT with the students which is learn through conventional assessment at grade V cluster V Sukasada sub district Buleleng regency in the academic year 2013/2014. This research was quasi-experiment research. The population of this research is all the grade V students at cluster V Sukasada sub district in amount of five classes. The sample of this research is the grade V students at SD N 2 Pacung which is consist of 23 students and the grade V students at SD N 1 Julah which is consist of 23 students, the sampling technique used was random sampling. The data collected by test instrument that is 35 questions of objective test and then analysis by descriptive statistic and inferential statistic (t-test). Based on the data analysis, provable that tcount = 3.67 and ttable (at significant standard 5%) = 2.02. This is means that tcount > ttable, so it can be interpreted that there is significant differences of learning outcome between the students which is learn through the implementation of authentic assessment development result based on ICT in learning process by 2013 curriculum with the students which is learn through conventional assessment. By arithmetic average, it can be known that the average score of the experiment group student’s is 26.35 and the average score of the control group student’s is 23.30. It’s mean that the average score of experiment group > the average score of control group, so it can be conclude that the implementation of authentic assessment development result based on ICT in learning process by 2013 curriculum had an positive effect through the students grave V learning outcome at cluster V Sukasada sub district, Buleleng regency.

Cloud Library Framework for Ethiopian Public Higher Learning Institutions

By Tilahun Shiferaw Patrick D. Cerna

DOI: https://doi.org/10.5815/ijmecs.2016.05.06, Pub. Date: 8 May 2016

The ever increasing users’ information need of electronic resources forced librarians to increase their effort of collecting, organizing, preserving and disseminating huge amount of electronic materials, which require state-of-the-art infrastructures so that the electronic resources be deployed easily, quickly and economically. Cloud library is the best option for libraries; especially where electronic library services divide is highly visible, like the Ethiopian higher learning institutions. Such library system allows the establishment of information technology infrastructure on demand and lowers the difficulty of control mechanism. The integration of existing library services can be implemented by clustering current library environment. The methodology employed for this work include a rigorous analysis of a recent research on one point cloud library service as an alternative to e-service provision and management. In addition, to designing a final framework a researchers conduct a survey research which helps to identify the stakeholders view on cloud library services, the model required and services needed. Questionnaire was used to collect data from purposively selected academic libraries. The selection was centered on the generation of universities namely 1st, 2nd and 3rd generation.

Emotional Design in Multimedia Learning: How Emotional Intelligence Moderates Learning

By Jeya Amantha Kumar Balakrishnan Muniandy Wan Ahmad Jaafar Wan Yahaya

DOI: https://doi.org/10.5815/ijmecs.2016.05.07, Pub. Date: 8 May 2016

This study is designed as a preliminary study to explore the effects of emotional intelligence (EI) on achievement, perceived intrinsic motivation and perceived satisfaction when expose to an emotional designed Multimedia Learning Environment (MLE) that was designed to induce either positive, neutral or negative emotions. All three designs had similar content and narration but differed in visual element such as colour, font size, font style and images. Based on the findings, it was reported that students performed better in the design used to induce negative emotion (NegD design) followed by the positive (PosD) and Neutral (NeuD). There is no significant difference in levels of emotional intelligence towards these learning outcomes; however, students with Low EI performed better overall. EI only qualified perceived satisfaction when using a MLE designed to induce emotions and it was found that students with Low EI preferred the design that induces positive emotions. In addition, High EI students favored designs with emotionality (positive or negative) compared to neutral design.

A Novel Approach for Data Cleaning by Selecting the Optimal Data to Fill the Missing Values for Maintaining Reliable Data Warehouse

By Raju Dara Ch. Satyanarayana A Govardhan

DOI: https://doi.org/10.5815/ijmecs.2016.05.08, Pub. Date: 8 May 2016

At present trillion of bytes of information is being created by projects particularly in web. To accomplish the best choice for business benefits, access to that information in a very much arranged and intuitive way is dependably a fantasy of business administrators and chiefs. Information warehouse is the main feasible arrangement that can bring the fantasy into reality. The upgrade of future attempts to settle on choices relies on upon the accessibility of right data that depends on nature of information basic. The quality information must be created by cleaning information preceding stacking into information distribution center following the information gathered from diverse sources will be grimy. Once the information have been pre-prepared and purified then it produces exact results on applying the information mining question. There are numerous cases where the data is sparse in nature. To get accurate results with sparse data is hard. In this paper the main goal is to fill the missing values in acquired data which is sparse in nature. Precisely caution must be taken to choose minimum number of text pieces to fill the holes for which we have used Jaccard Dissimilarity function for clustering the data which is frequent in nature.
